Australian Light Horse (free translation: Australian Light Cavalry) is an Australian cavalry unit founded at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is often assumed that the Australian Light Horse was formed as a result of a debate conducted in the military circles of the Australian Armed Forces in the 1990s, when it was found that due to the size of Australia and its topographic conditions it would be necessary to form a new cavalry unit whose soldiers they will be trained to fight both "with a horse" and on foot. Some rather distant parallels can be found here with the units of dragoons from the 17th and 18th centuries. The Australian Light Horse units underwent their baptism of fire during the Second Boer War (1899-1902), where they passed the exam. This, in turn, contributed to some quantitative increase in this formation. On the eve of the outbreak of World War I, the Australian Light Horse consisted of 23 cavalry regiments, 2 of which were independent (the 25th and 26th Regiment), and the remaining 21 regiments were formed into 6 brigades. In total, these units numbered about 9,000 people. Australian Light Horse units took an active part in the course of World War I, fighting mainly on the Gallipolli and in Palestine and Mesopotamia, where they were part of the ANZAC troops.
