Type DD51 is the type designation of Japanese diesel locomotives from the post-war period. Locomotives of this type were produced in the years 1962-1978. In total, 649 units of these rail vehicles were built. The weight of a single locomotive was 84 tons, and its length with buffers - 18 m. The locomotives were adapted to the 1067 mm rail gauge. Their axis arrangement is B-2-B. The DD51 locomotives were developed to complement the Japanese rolling stock of the D51 and C62 steam locomotives. They were characterized by both higher power and higher maximum speed than their predecessors. The engine, which is the "heart" of the DD51 locomotives, was developed as a far-reaching development of the engine used in the DD13 locomotives. It is worth adding that the production of these locomotives was carried out by several large companies, primarily: Kawasaki, Hitachi and Mitsubishi. In April 2016, there were still 29 locomotives of this type in use in Japan.
