Picts is the collective name for the peoples who inhabited the northern part of today's Scotland during the period from about the 1st to the middle of the 9th century. It is worth adding that all information about the history and military of the Picts has survived to our times mainly thanks to Roman, Irish and Anglo-Saxon sources, and the Pictish, written source materials are more than sparse. Incidentally, the name itself (Picts) derives from the Latin term "picti", meaning painted. Pictish warriors, going into battle, painted their bodies. It can also be assumed that they often tattooed them as well. Due to the harsh climate of northern Scotland, the Picts often used a relatively thick tunic made of wool or linen. The archaeological material also confirms the use of leather shoes, but it is difficult to say whether their use was the rule. It is highly probable that the use of armor other than cloth armor was very limited, and probably the armor obtained from the Roman army (e.g. lorica squamata) was most often used in this role. There are also many indications that the use of helmets by Picts was very rare. The offensive weapons used were mainly spears, one- and two-handed battle axes and knives. Swords, although used, were rather rare. The main defensive weapon was usually a round shield.
