Swiss Guard Papal Swiss Guard, Italian Guardia Svizzera Pontificia) is a military unit, currently responsible for the security of the Pope and being a kind of "armed forces" of the Papal State. It was formed during the Italian wars (1494-1559) in 1506 from the best mercenaries in Europe at that time, i.e. Swiss soldiers. The tradition that only Swiss citizens are admitted to the unit has continued to this day and hence its Polish name. Currently, it has 135 people, and its commander (since 2015) is Christoph Graf, although the formal superior is each time the Pope. To join The Swiss Guard, in addition to Swiss citizenship, must also be a Catholic, undergo military training in the Swiss Armed Forces, be in a very good physical condition and be between 19 and 30 years old. People with higher education are welcome. The soldiers of the Swiss Guard perform ceremonial and protocol functions, but also undergo thorough shooting and first aid training. It is assumed that the Guard is also able to undertake convoy tasks.
