After the October Revolution (1917) and the victory in the civil war in Russia (most often dated 1917 / 1918-1922), the Bolshevik authorities introduced a new banner in the Soviet Union, which was recognized as the official state flag in December 1922, and was in force from 1923. It showed a golden cross of a hammer and sickle, above which there was a red star in a golden jacket. All these elements were placed in the upper left corner of the flag, and the entire flag was dominated by the color red. The hammer and sickle symbolized the proletarians of the USSR, by implication peasants and workers, the red star was sometimes perceived as the dawn of a bright future, while the red color was most often regarded as a symbol of blood shed either during the October Revolution and the Civil War, or more broadly - as a symbol of the struggle of the working class . This banner, with only cosmetic changes, survived until the collapse of the USSR. It was also hung on the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag in May 1945, symbolizing the triumph of the USSR in World War II. It is worth adding that during World War II, national flags with various patriotic slogans or additional emblems were often used.
