The F88 Austeyr is an Australian 5.56 mm assault rifle, manufactured under an Austrian license, from modern times. The first prototypes of the Austrian version of this weapon were made in 1978, and serial production began a year later - in 1979. The initial velocity of the projectile fired from this weapon is up to 970 m / s, and the theoretical rate of fire is up to 850 rounds per minute. The effective range of the shot from the weapon was up to 300 meters, but the maximum range was 2700 meters.

The F88 Austeyr is a license version of the Austrian carbine Steyr AUG-77 developed and manufactured by the Steyr-Daimler-Puch concern, and more precisely by the plants Steyr-Mannlicher GmbH und Com. KG. The weapon is characterized by the use of a bullpup system, also known as a crankless system, but also good or very good ballistic properties, good reliability, but also a relatively low curb weight. This weapon was adopted by the Australian Army in the AUG A1 version, and its theoretical rate of fire compared to the original was increased from 750-800 to 850 rounds / min. The basic version used in Australia Defense Force is the F88 carbine Austeyr, but a version with a shorter barrel (F88C), a version with additional optics (F88SA1) or a version with an attached M203 grenade launcher (F88 GLA Austeyr) are also used.
