The Pratt and Whitney TF-33 (another designation: Pratt and Whitney JT3D) is an American air two-flow jet engine from the Cold War and modern times. The first successful engine start-up took place in 1958, and serial production started a year later and continued until 1985. About 8,500 engines of this type were created during the project. In the TF33-P-7 version, the engine is approx. 361 cm long and the weight of the "dry" engine is 2,809 kilograms. The thrust generated by the engine was 76 kN. The Pratt and Whitney JT3D engine was originally developed primarily for the civil aviation market as a very far-reaching modification of the JT3C engine. The new engine was to become primarily a power unit for passenger aircraft such as the Boeing 707 or some versions of the Douglas DC8. When the engine achieved considerable success in this market, it was adapted to military needs under the designation TF-33 and was mounted on such planes as KC-135 Stratotankers, E-3 Sentry AWACS or B-52H Stratofortress
