The B-43 is an American airborne, free-fall, thermonuclear (hydrogen) bomb from the Cold War period. The design and research work on this weapon was carried out in the years 1955-1960, and its production lasted in the years 1960-1970. The weapon entered the line in 1961 and was officially withdrawn from it in the 1990s. The maximum length of the bomb was 416 cm with a diameter of 46 centimeters. The maximum power of the blast was 1 MT. The B-43 thermonuclear bomb was created in connection with the desire of the American armed forces in the mid-1950s to have a possibly light bomb of this type that could be carried by USAF, US Navy and Marine Corps tactical planes. During production, several versions of the B-43 bomb were created. Chronologically, the first was the 3.8 m long Mod 0 version intended for the destruction of fortified points. Later, the Mod 1 version appeared, which had the ability to program detonation at a given height from the ground. Mod versions 2, 3, 4 and 5 differed mainly in detonators. The B-43 bomb could be carried by such planes as, for example: B-52, F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-4 Skyhawk or A-6 Intruder.
