Contemporary, feminine, Bavarian folk costume called "dirndl" probably dates back to the Middle Ages, and certainly to the late modern era, when it was worn either by maids or by peasants, as a rather festive garment. Interestingly, it was very popular in southern Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. Currently, it is treated as an element of the folklore of Bavaria, but also of Austria or, more broadly, of the German-speaking Alpine region. It is established by waitresses in local restaurants (Oktoberfest is a perfect example!), But also tour guides or local politicians who want to emphasize their attachment to the region. The dirndl worn nowadays consists of a corset, a blouse with a square neckline, a skirt and aprons. It is worth adding that elements such as gloves or a hat are only an addition to the outfit, not an integral part of it. Often the knot worn by the aprons indicates the marital status of a woman - on the left - a virgin, on the right - a married woman, and on the back - a widow.
