At present, the Army Medical Service (AMS for short) is responsible for the broadly understood medical care of soldiers serving in the British Army, which medical service is divided into four further formations, the most important of which is the Royal Army Medical Corps. This formation was established in 1898 and after many changes it still exists in the structures of the British Army. Responsible for providing British soldiers with first aid (both in the back and on the front lines), carrying out surgical procedures, and providing the soldier with psychological and psychiatric care. It is also very often used in humanitarian aid operations. In the course of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, British soldiers requiring long-term medical care were most frequently hospitalized at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. In the British AMS, as in the entire British army, only professional soldiers, after specialized training, are used.
