The lighthouse was built in Kampen in 1855-1856 and put into operation in 1856. The construction of the lighthouse was commissioned by the Danish king Frederick VII, but shortly afterwards it became part of the Kingdom of Prussia, and later the German state united in 1871. The lighthouse is located on the island of Sylt by the North Sea. It was erected from the so-called Bornholm bricks, and to strengthen the building in 1875 it was girdled with iron belts, and in 1929 it was electrified. The lighthouse tower is 40 meters high, but thanks to its foundation on a small hill, it rises about 62 meters above sea level. The range of the white light it casts is 20 nautical miles (NM), and the red light is about 16 NM, or about 37 and 30 kilometers, respectively. The lighthouse fortunately survived both world wars, and in 1977 it was automated, and in the years 2004-2005 it was modernized and restored. The Kampen lighthouse is considered one of the most beautiful lighthouses in the North Sea.
