Otto Smik was born in 1922 and died in 1944. He was a Czechoslovakian ace of World War II with at least 16 certain and probable air victories to his credit. Otto Smik came to the world in Georgia, but at the age of 12 he moved with his family to what was then Czechoslovakia. This choice was determined by my father's Slovak origins. As a teenager, Otto Smik was passionate about modeling and gliding, and even before the outbreak of World War II, he took a glider pilot course. After the annexation of Czechoslovakia by the Third Reich, he decided to break through to France and fight the occupant. After many adventures, however, he did not get there until June 1940, i.e. at the time of the surrender of this country. Thus, Otto Smik evacuated with other Czechoslovak pilots to Great Britain, where he volunteered to join the RAF. From the summer of 1940 to the end of 1942, he underwent intensive general aviation training and a fighter pilot course. He joined the airline in early 1943, and his first aerial victory was in March of the same year. Otto Smik became famous not only as a great fighter pilot, but also as a pilot who could boast of destroying three V-1 missiles in one combat flight! In 1944, he was also shot down over the Netherlands, but although he landed behind enemy lines, he managed to break through to his own troops. He died on November 28, 1944. Otto Smik is recognized as the best Slovak fighter pilot of World War II.
