The Douglas O-38 was an observation aircraft of American production from the interwar period. The drive was provided by a single engine in the basic version Pratt and Whitney R-1690 with 525 hp. The first flight of this machine took place at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s, and serial production continued in 1931-1934. In its course, 156 aircraft of this type were built. The deck armament consisted of two 7.62 mm machine guns.
The Douglas O-38 was commissioned by the US Air Force, which reported a need for a new observation and liaison aircraft. The Douglas production plant, in order to shorten the time of research and development works, significantly modified the O-25 plane, creating the O-38 machine based on it. In the course of serial production, several versions of the Douglas O-38 aircraft were created, including: O-38C (a machine adapted to the needs of the Coast Guard), O-38E (version with a more powerful engine, operated by the National Guard) or O-38F (version observation unit, unarmed). At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, there were still single copies of this plane in the line. The users of the Douglas O-38 machine were the United States, Peru and Colombia.
