The Douglas VC-118 "Independence" was an American airliner designed to carry the US President from the post-war period. The drive was provided by four Pratt and Whitney R-2800 engines with a power of up to 2500 HP each. The length of the aircraft was 32.18 meters with a wingspan of 35.81 meters. The traveling speed slightly exceeded 500 km / h. And the flight range is 4,840 kilometers.
The Douglas VC-118 "Independence" was built as a largely modernized Douglas DC-6 aircraft. The main differences were in the completely rebuilt and redesigned passenger compartment, much richer electronic equipment (the machine was equipped, for example, with an on-board weather radar) and the navigation equipment that was advanced at that time. The engines with increased maximum power were also modernized. Douglas VC-118 "Independence" entered service in 1947 and was retired in 1953. The only US president he carried on board was Harry Truman. Interestingly, after 1953, the machine was used to transport VIPs in the US Air Force. Finally, the machine went to the museum in 1965.
