The Ducati 998 is an Italian sports and racing motorcycle that was first presented to the public in 2002. Its serial production started at the same time and continued until 2004.

The 998 model was developed and put into production in order to strengthen the company's position in the sports motorcycle segment, as well as to replace the 996 model in the commercial offer and on the racetracks. The new motorcycle differed from its predecessor mainly in the engine (Ducati Testastretta) slightly higher displacement (998 cm3 compared to 996 cm3), but generating 11 HP more maximum power and able to work at higher maximum revs. Many other components and elements remained almost the same as in the previous model. The style of the motorcycle did not undergo a revolution either. Nevertheless, the Ducati 998 turned out to be a successful bike and its rider Troy Bayliss won the 2001 World Motorcycle Championship! The Ducati 998 also appeared in the 2003 movie "Matrix: Reloaded".
