The type EF66 is the type designation for Japanese electric locomotives from the post-war period. Locomotives of this type were mass-produced in the years 1968-1991. In total, about 190 of these rail vehicles were built, of which 39 were still in service in 2016. The weight of a single locomotive is 101 tons, and its length with buffers is 18.2 meters. The locomotives are adapted to a rail gauge of 1067 mm. Their axis arrangement is Bo-Bo-Bo. The EF66 locomotives were developed for Japanese National Railways as locomotives designed to achieve the highest possible speeds. Initially, they were dedicated primarily to freight trains, but over time they were also attached to passenger trains. Despite the external similarity to the EF65 type locomotives, they had about 50% more maximum power than them. It is worth adding that the production of these locomotives was carried out by several large companies, primarily: Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Kisha Seizo.
