The English Civil War is a conflict that took place in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland in the years 1642-1649 or, according to other chronologies in the period 1642-1651. The main cause of the conflict was the clear social dispute that had been growing since the beginning of the 17th century between the absolutist monarchs of the Stuart dynasty (Jacob I and Charles I), the Anglican Church supporting them and the English nobility, and the English middle nobility (eng. gentry) and wealthy bourgeoisie striving to expand the powers of the parliamentary power. The conflict was compounded by economic problems related to the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and religious quarrels. In the course of the war, Oliver Cromwell played a large role in the army of the Parliament, who reorganized his troops shortly after the beginning of the conflict, creating the so-called New Deal Army, in which a lot of emphasis was placed on the morale of soldiers, their training, but also promotion of even the low-born, which was an element in England and Europe at that time. A peculiar elite of this army formed the so-called "Ironsides", or units of heavy cavalry, used to break the position of royalist troops. The most important battles of the civil war in England are primarily Naseby (1645), but also Marston Moor (1644).
