General Electric J79 is an American single-flow air afterburner turbojet engine from the Cold War period. The first successful engine start-up took place in 1955 and series production started shortly after. Over 17,000 engines of this type were created in its course. In the J79-GE-17 version, the engine is 530 cm long with a diameter of 98 centimeters. The weight of the "dry" engine is 1750 kilograms. The thrust generated by the engine was 52.96 kN, and with the afterburner - 79.33 kN. The General Electric J79 engine was designed from the beginning as a drive unit capable of exceeding Mach 2 speed, and the machine under which it was designed was the Convair B-58 Hustler bomber. The engine was distinguished at that time by the variable steering geometry of the compressor, thanks to which the risk of disturbances in the air flow in the engine at high speeds was minimized. It turned out to be a successful drive unit with good reliability. In addition to the B-58, it has been used in such aircraft as, for example, Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II or North American A-5 Vigilante. The engine was also licensed in West Germany, Belgium and Italy.
