National Guard of Ukraine The National Guard of Ukraine, or NGU for short) is the Ukrainian National Gendarmerie. This uniformed service was formed for the first time in 1991, it was disbanded in 2000 to be reactivated in 2014 in connection with the military operations of the Russian Federation in the Crimea and in the Donbas region. At present, NGU reports administratively and organizationally to the Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior. In 2016, the Guard numbered approximately 46,000 people, most of them volunteered. It is worth adding that the NGU battalions stationed in the Donbass and Azov region put up tough and decisive resistance against the pro-Russian separatists, despite the lack of armament, equipment and generally poor command. It is worth adding that at present the National Guard of Ukraine performs numerous functions: it takes part in de facto combat operations (see: operations in Donbas), provides protection of the most important public facilities and buildings, and carries out transport tasks.
