Frederick I Barbarossa of the Hohenstauff dynasty was born around 1122 and died on June 10, 1190. He was the king of Germany (in the years 1152-1190) and the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in the years 1155-1190, and in the years 1154-1186 he also had the title of King of Italy. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa pursued a very ambitious foreign policy, in the course of which he sought primarily to increase his position in Italy, which led to the next stage of the conflict between the Empire and the Papacy, also known as the large Mundi Dominion or the investiture dispute, which happened during the reign of Barbarossa took the form of a struggle for political power over today's Italy. Fighting in the area of the peninsula Apennine (mainly with the Papacy and the Lombard League) were long and fought differently for the emperor, but the last expedition of 1184-1186 brought him the crown of the Kingdom of Sicily and a truce with Milan. The foreign policy of Frederick I Barbarossa also led to the theoretical subjugation of Denmark and Polish principalities (a tribute in Krzyszków from 1157). The emperor also organized the Third Crusade to the Holy Land, during which he drowned in the waters of the Salef River in 1190. Concentrating on external politics, he was not very successful in internal politics - what is more, many historians believe that despite strenuous attempts to strengthen the imperial power in Germany, they ultimately failed, and in the 12th century Germany fell into a progressive feudal fragmentation. Despite these setbacks, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa is nevertheless considered one of the most outstanding German emperors of the Middle Ages.
