The GBU-43 / B MOAB is a modern American precision fuel-air aerial bomb. It is capable of carrying explosives (in serial specimens it is H-6 material) weighing up to 8482 kg with a total empty weight of 9800 kg. The bomb entered the equipment of the US armed forces in 2003. Dynetics is responsible for its production. Due to its destructive power, it is called the "mother of all bombs". The unit cost of the bomb in 2017 was estimated at $ 16 million (USD).
The GBU-43 / B MOAB bomb was developed at the beginning of the 21st century to replace the BLU-82 bomb in the US Air Force's arsenal. During transport to the target, it rests on a special sled, and at the time of drop it descends on a special parachute. GBU-43 / B is guided to the target using the INS and GPS systems. Its main goal is to destroy large surface targets and the enemy's living force. Despite initial plans, it was not used during the 2003 operation in Iraq. It was first used in combat in April 2017 against fighters of the so-called Islamic State (ISIS). Due to its considerable weight, the GBU-43 / B MOAB can be carried by modernized versions of the C-130 Hercules and - probably - the C-17 Globemaster. The B-52 and B-2 Spirit strategic bombers are likely to be the target users of these bombs.
