HMS Calcutta (D82) was a British light cruiser under which The keel was laid in October 1917, and the launch took place in July 1918. HMS Calcutta (D82) was one of the C-class cruisers. Units of this type were designed just before the outbreak of the Great War and were intended to be used primarily in the North Sea basin. Hence, a lot of emphasis was placed on the highest possible seaworthiness, relatively strong artillery or armor, at the expense of the crew's comfort or the swimming range. In general, however, a series of solid and rather successful cruisers was created. HMS Calcutta (D82) was built at the Vickers Limited shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness in the North West of England. The unit did not take part in World War I, and in the interwar period it operated mainly in the Atlantic, including today's South Africa and the Caribbean Sea. It also supported British troops fighting in Greece and Crete in 1941. On June 1, 1941, it was sunk in an air attack at the port of Alexandria.
