The Nakajima Sakae was a Japanese aircraft engine from the interwar and World War II periods. The Nakajima Aircraft Company was responsible for its production. It was first tested in 1939. The engine - in the Sakae 21 version - weighed 590 kilograms with a displacement of 27.9 liters. However, it was one of the most important Japanese aircraft engines of the Second World War. It is estimated that about 30,000 copies of it were produced during its duration.

The Nakajima Sakae was an air-cooled, double-star 14-cylinder radial engine. It was developed on the basis of another Nakajima drive unit called Ha-5. Compared to its predecessor, it has been reduced, its weight has been reduced and many other small mechanical improvements have been applied. Overall, they made up a very successful drive unit with a very good power-weight ratio. The Nakajima Sakae was constantly improved and in subsequent versions it achieved higher and higher maximum powers, for example: the Sakae 12 model had a power of 925 HP, Sakae 21 - 1115-1130 HP, and the maximum power of the Sakae 31 version reached 1210 HP. The engine was used as a power unit for many Japanese military aircraft. It powered such planes as, for example: Kawasaki Ki-48, Nakajima B5N2 or G1N Gekko, but especially - Mitsubishi A6M Zero.
