King's German Legion (in short: KGL) is a military unit from the Napoleonic Wars period (1799-1815), composed of soldiers of German origin, but being in the pay of the British. The unit was formed in 1803 and its formal dissolution took place in 1816. The soldiers for this legion were recruited primarily from veterans of the Hanover and Hessian armies. At the time of its formation, the legion was composed only of a light infantry unit, but in the course of the Napoleonic wars it grew and had a total of 10 light infantry battalions, 6 artillery batteries and as many as 5 cavalry regiments, including 2 dragoons regiments, transformed in 1812 into light regiments. dragoons ( 1st and 2nd Regiment of Light Dragoons). At its peak, in 1812, the unit numbered about 18,000 soldiers. It is worth adding that the King's German Legion units were used on the battlefields independently of each other, fighting in various parts of Europe. A significant part of them was directed to the Iberian, where they took part (together or separately) in such battles as Busaco, Albuera and Salamanca (1812). Some of the KGL units also fought at Waterloo in 1815. The King's German Legion units were famous for their high bravery, very good discipline, and in the case of cavalry units - high riding skills. After the Napoleonic Wars, some KGL officers and soldiers joined the army of the Kingdom of Hanover.
