In August 1939, he was mobilized to the Navy and took an active part in the September campaign in defense of Hel. The unit, along with its crew, made history by a daring escape to Sweden on the night of October 1-2, 1939. The unit was interned there and survived until the end of the war. In 1947, the unit returned to service in the Polish Border Guard, which it served until 1957. Currently, ORP Batory serves as a museum exhibit.
