The Libyan civil war that overthrew the dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi broke out in February 2011 and ended in October of the same year. Its main reasons are the disastrous economic situation of the majority of Libyans, the high level of unemployment, dissatisfaction with the rule of Muammar Gaddafi or the influence of the so-called Arab Spring. The beginning of the war is considered to be February 15, and just two days later there were mass protests against the dictator (the so-called Day of Wrath) all over Libya. At the end of February, the first armed fights also took place, in which Kadaffi used mercenary units in disbelief in his own armed forces. After initial successes, rebel troops were pushed on the defensive as early as March 2011. However, in the same month, Western countries intervened on behalf of the United Nations, and NATO structures quickly took over the command of the entire operation. This fact significantly slowed down pro-government Libyan troops and facilitated the actions of the rebels. By mid-September, rebel units already controlled about 80-85% of Libya, and the last battles were fought for the cities Bani Walid and Sirte. It should be remembered, however, that the civil war of 2011 led to the political destabilization of Libya and many ethnic conflicts, which led to another civil war in 2014.
