The Royal Ordnance L1 is a British 120mm rifled tank gun from the Cold War period. The gun on display was the main armament of the FV 214 Conqueror heavy tank, which entered the service of the British Army in 1955. The plants were responsible for the development and production of weapons Royal Ordnance Factories. The Royal Ordnance L1 cannon was in fact a modernized version of the American tank cannon used in the M103 car. The gun was based on separate-loading shells, and moreover, copper shells were used for throwing charges. On the one hand, such a solution increased the safety of the crew and made it difficult to ignite these loads outside the gun, on the other hand - it limited the number of shells quite significantly. In the FV 214 Conqueror, the fire unit was 35 rounds. It is assumed that the Royal Ordnance L1 gun was able to penetrate an armor plate inclined at an angle of 30 degrees, 221 mm thick at a distance of approx. 900 meters and 196 mm at a distance of approx. 1,850 meters. Thus, its performance in this respect was almost identical to that of the M58.
