The M256A1 is an American 120mm smoothbore tank gun from the Cold War and modern times. The cannon is the main armament of the M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tanks. In essence, it is a modernized version of the Rheinmetall Rh-120 cannon. Watervliet Arsenal in New York is responsible for its production in the United States. The gun has a barrel length of 44 calibers, or 528 centimeters. The initial velocity of the bullet fired from this gun is up to 1700-1750 m / s, so it is almost exactly the same as in the German original. The M256A1 gun fire unit ranges from 40 to 42 rounds in the M1A1 and M1A2 tanks, respectively. The cannon can fire various types of anti-tank missiles, including: M829 / M829A1 (depleted uranium missile), M892A2 (APFSDS type missile) or the M1028 "cluster" missile, introduced into use after the Second World War in Iraq (2003). It is generally assumed that the M256A1 cannon is capable of fighting virtually all Russian-made tanks from the T-72, T-80 and T-90 families.
