The M61 Vulcan is an American air gun from the post-war and modern times. The first prototypes of the weapon appeared shortly after World War II, but the mature version of the weapon entered service in 1958 - it remains in it to this day! The curb weight of this weapon, without the power system, in the M61A1 version is 112 kilograms, and the initial velocity of the bullet fired from this weapon is up to 1050 m / s. The weapon has a fantastic theoretical rate of fire of up to 6600 rounds per minute in the M61A2 version! The M61 Vulcan air cannon was developed at the subsidiary plants of General Electric as a next-generation rapid-fire cannon designed for close combat and countering enemy jets. It uses a solution patented by Gatling and an electric or hydraulic drive. The original version of the cannon (designation: M61) used tape ammunition, which, however, was changed in the subsequent version, designated as M61A1, to a tapeless ammunition supply system. There was also a version of the cannon designated as M61A2 with a reduced curb weight (from 112 kg to 91.6 kg). The M61 Vulcan cannon in various versions has been widely used in American aircraft since the late 1950s. They were set on such machines as: F-104 Starfighter, F-105 Thuderchief, F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle or F / A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet.
