McDonnell Douglas DC-10 był trójsilnikowym, odrzutowym samolotem pasażerskim średniego i dalekiego zasięgu w układzie dolnopłata produkcji amerykańskiej. Napęd zapewniały trzy silniki turbowentylatorowe Pratt and Whitney JT9D-20 lub General Electric CF6-6D. Oblot prototypu miał miejsce w 1970 roku, a produkcja seryjna trwała w latach 1971-1989. Wytworzono ok. 450 egzemplarzy tego samolotu.
McDonnell Douglas DC-10 powstał na specjalne zamówienie linii lotniczych American Airlines, które chciały uzyskać samolot mniejszy od Boeinga 747, ale o zbliżonym zasięgu lotu oraz mogącego operować z lotnisk o niskiej jakości pasa startowego. Firma McDonnell Douglas sprostała tym wymaganiom. W toku produkcji seryjnej powstało kilka wersji rozwojowych DC-10. Pierwszą produkowaną seryjnie był DC-10-10, których jedynym odbiorca były linie: American Airlines oraz United Airlines. Krótko później powstała wersja DC-10-30 o nowych silnikach, powiększonym zasięgu lotu oraz zwiększonych zbiornikach paliwa. Była to najpopularniejsza wersja DC-10. Zależnie od wersji maszyna mogła zabierać na pokład od 265 do 380 pasażerów.
