Gmu Model 35001 Motorised Submersible Canoe (MSC) "Sleeping Beauty" project

The Motorized Submersible Canoe (MSC for short), sometimes called Sleeping Beauty, is a one-person submarine in the shape of a canoe from the Second World War. A single MSC was approx. 3.8 m long, with a curb weight of approx. 270 kg. The drive was provided by a single electric motor, and the maximum speed was up to 4.4 knots, while the operating range was up to 40 nautical miles (approx. 74 km).

The Motorized Submersible Canoe was developed by Major Hugh Reeves, and was dedicated to be used by British Special Forces or Special Purpose Forces (SOE) to carry out covert actions in coastal waters and in enemy ports. Compared to other similar British units (e.g. the Chariot steered torpedo), it was lighter, easier to navigate, easier to use and cheaper to build. At the same time, however, it required a well-trained operator. One of the most famous actions for which the MSC was used was their participation in Operation Rimau, i.e. the attack of British, Australian and New Zealand commandos on the port of Singapore in September 1944.
