Onufry Zag³oba is an imaginary literary character who appears in the novels by Henryk Sinkiewicz included in the Trilogy ("Deluge", "Fire and Mieczem", "Pan Wo³odyjowski"). Nothing specific about this character can be said. He said about himself that he traveled in many countries, especially to the east of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He also claimed to have visited the Holy Land. Its exact age is also difficult to determine. Moreover, in the opening passages of the Trilogy, he introduces himself as John, and later he is Onuphrius, a name he uses until the end of the series of novels. The figure of Onufry Zag³o is an archetypal Polish nobleman from the 17th century, characterized by a penchant for alcohol, fun and telling stories that are far from the truth. At the same time, however, Sienkiewicz endowed him with such features as, for example, a great sense of humor, a kind of eloquence, loyalty to his comrades or patriotism. He is undoubtedly not a great warrior, but he takes part hand in hand with his companions in successive skirmishes and battles marked on the pages of the Trilogy.
