The BM-5401 is one of the motor barges, which belongs to the BM 500 type. The BM 500 type barges were designed in the second half of the 1950s at the Design and Studies Office of the River Rolling Stock in Wroc³aw. Vessels of this type were created in connection with the need to create a new barge, dedicated to inland navigation, which would be suitable for mass production and was primarily intended for the transport of goods - especially on the Oder and Vistula rivers. The production of these successful and relatively cheap barges was carried out in the years 1958-1968. In total, several versions of the BM 500 barges were created, differing mainly in the equipment of the gym and propulsion units. Barges of this type are one of the main elements of Polish inland navigation and despite the passing years, they are still characterized by such advantages as a favorable power-to-weight ratio, efficient propulsion system and good load capacity.
