Peter the Great (originally planned name: Yuri Andropov) was a Soviet, and later a Russian, nuclear-powered missile cruiser, the keel of which was laid in 1986, the launch took place in April 1989, and entry into service did not take place until 1998. The unit is still in active service. The total length of the ship is 252 meters and a width of 28.5 meters. Full displacement reaches 28,000 tons and maximum speed up to 32 knots. The cruiser is armed with: one twin 130 mm cannon, six CADS-N-1 artillery and missile sets, 20 SS-N-19 rocket launchers (P-700 Granit), 64 SA-N-9 rocket launchers (3K95) or 48 S-300F rocket launchers. The ship can also operate three Kamow Ka-25 or Ka-27 helicopters.

Peter the Great was the fourth and last Kirov-class ship. The Kirov-class ships were designed and built as powerful units designed to combat enemy surface and underwater navigation. Later, extensive possibilities of countering air targets were also added. Units of this type, at the time of launching, were the largest warships in the world - apart from aircraft carriers. They were also instrumental in restoring the Iowa-class battleships to active service in the US Navy. The admission to the service of Peter the Great was significantly delayed due to the gigantic financial problems related to the collapse of the USSR. It was only in 1996 that the unit underwent sea trials and its construction was completed at the shipyard in Severomorsk. In 2000, the unit participated in the rescue operation after the disaster on the Kursk submarine, and a year later secured the lifting of the wreck from the seabed. In 2004, Piotr the Great successfully completed repair and renovation works.
