The K-550 Alexander Nevskiy is the second of the Borei Class Russian ballistic missile submarines to be launched, and is a close copy of the Yuriy Dolgoukiy the lead submarine of the class.
The submarine is expected to enter service in 2012 with the North Atlantic Fleet.
The Borei Class is to replace the Delta and Typhoon classes, but has been delayed by problems with the weapon systems.
First the R-39UTTH "Bark" missile was canceled, and the replacement, the R-30 "Bulava" has also been delayed by test failures.
The early Borei SSBN's will carry 16 missiles, later vessels will be modified to carry 20. The submarine is 170 meters long and is capable of 28 knots submerged.
In addition to her ballistic missiles, she has 6 torpedo tubes capable of launching PRK-2 "Viyuga" cruise missiles. Crew is 55 Officers and 52 enlisted men.
Alexander Nevsky is a Russian submarine belonging to the Borej class. Units of this class are nuclear-powered submarines - ballistic missile carriers (SSBN), which have been built since 2007. Currently, five ships of the type have been launched, but ships of this type are still being built. The length of the Borej-class ship is 170 m, width 13.5 m, and the underwater displacement is most likely up to about 24,000 tons. The maximum underwater speed is approximately 29 knots. The main armament of units of this class consists of 16 SS-NX-30 (R-30 Bu³awa) ballistic missile launchers and 6 533 mm torpedo tubes.
The Borej class ships (Project 955) were constructed as a completely new structure, intended to replace the Delta III and Typhoon class ships in the line. They differ from their predecessors primarily with much richer electronic equipment and even more careful soundproofing, including the use of pump-jet drives. They are also adapted to firing new ballistic missiles (R-30 Bulawa) with a range of up to 8,000 kilometers and capable of carrying up to 6 MIRV warheads. Most likely, the Navy of the Russian Federation will ultimately intend to acquire 8 to 10 units of this type. The ship Alexander Nevsky (K-550) was built at the shipyard in the city of Severodvinsk. The keel for this unit was laid in 2004, and launched in December 2010, and in October of the following year, the ship began its first sea tests. He entered line service in December 2013. At present, the unit belongs to the Pacific Ocean Fleet. Its estimated construction cost is approximately $ 770 million. 2012 prices.
