The Type 89 is the name for the Japanese 127 mm anti-aircraft sea gun from the interwar period and World War II. The gun's own weight was 3,100 kilograms, and its barrel was 5,080 millimeters, or 40 calibers. The weight of a single bullet ranged from 21 to 23.4 kilograms depending on the type of ammunition. The maximum firing range at an elevation angle of 45 degrees was approximately 14,800 meters. The first prototypes of the Type 89 gun were built as early as 1928, but the weapon didn't go into production until 1932. This type of weapon was developed to replace the Japanese 80mm sea anti-aircraft guns (the so-called Model of the Third Year) and the 120mm / 40 cannons. However, it proved to be a very successful type of weapon and was the primary heavy anti-aircraft gun of Japanese carriers, battleships and cruisers during World War II. Most often, the Type 89 gun was mounted on double-gun turrets.
