The Shafrir-1 is an air-to-air guided missile of the Israeli Cold War period. The projectile is 250 cm long with a span of 55 cm and a diameter of 14 centimeters. Its total weight is 65 kg, with the maximum weight of the warhead being 11 kg. It is assumed that the effective range of the projectile did not exceed 5 kilometers. The Shafrir-1 missile was developed by the Israeli arms concern currently bearing the name Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Limited (RAFAEL for short) commissioned by the Israeli Air Force, which sought to obtain a domestically produced air-to-air missile. In this way, the aim was to become independent from the import of this type of weapon, and also - indirectly - to support the development of the domestic arms industry. Work on the missile The Shafrir-1 lasted from 1959 to 1964, and the main carrier of the new missiles was seen in the Mirage III. However, in the course of tests, the missile turned out to have very poor performance, especially the effective range, which meant that work on its successor - the Shafrir-2 missile - was very quickly started.
