The Soviet army during the Cold War (1945-1991) numbered from 2.8 to 5.1 million soldiers. It was a conscript army, in which basic military service lasted three years, and from 1967 - two years. In the mid-1980s, the Soviet army was able to deploy approximately 210 divisions. It is worth remembering that, based on the experience of World War II, the Soviet high command assumed a lightning war, in which motorized and mechanized units would play a huge role. Thus, a great role was played by the broadly understood drivers of motor vehicles - from tank drivers, armored personnel carriers, to supply trucks driving cars. Considering such a large role of drivers in the Soviet Army, emphasis was placed on their training before recruiting recruits by the armed forces, and an organization called DOSAAF was responsible for training drivers of trucks and other wheeled vehicles. At the end of the 1980s, the training conducted by this institution among high school students included 550 hours of classes, 60 of which were devoted to practical truck driving, and approx. 320 hours to skills related to vehicle repair, maintenance or proper use. It is also worth adding that in the motorized infantry battalion, at the end of the 1980s, there were 47 KTO BTR-60/70/80 full-time units and 27 different types of trucks. Of course, each of these vehicles required a properly trained driver!
