In the course of the German-Soviet war, also called the Great Patriotic War in the USSR, of 1941-1945, women played a significant role in the Soviet armed forces. It is assumed that during the entire war about 800,000 women passed through these forces, of which in 1943 about 348,000 people served. women, and in 1945 - around 460,000. Above all, they played a huge role in the formation of the Soviet medical personnel - for example, about 46% of the doctors in the Red Army were women. However, it should also be remembered that they served in the backstage of fighting units, and unlike other armies of World War II, they also fought on the front lines, as infantry soldiers, sniper rifles, tankers or aircraft crew members. It is worth remembering that only women belonged to the three WWS air regiments: 586th Fighter Squadron, 46th Guard Night Bomber Regiment (called by the Germans "Night Witches") and 125th Guard Bomber Regiment. Of the approximately 800,000 women serving in the USSR's armed forces, nearly 200,000 were decorated, and 89 women were awarded the Order of the Hero of the Soviet Union. The most famous female soldiers of the Soviet army include, for example, hunting aces: Lidia Litwiak and Jekaterina Budanowa or the sniper rifle Roza Shanina.
