The KW-3 (another designation: Object 223) was a Soviet prototype heavy tank from the Second World War. The only prototype of this vehicle was created in 1941, but the tank never entered mass production. The vehicle was powered by a single 850hp V-2SH 12-cylinder engine, and was to be armed with a single 107mm cannon and probably two 7.62mm DT machineguns.
The KW-3 was created as a far-reaching modernization of the KW-1 heavy tank. Compared to the latter, the new tank received a new power unit with more power, a turret of a completely different shape with sloped armor. The car also had much thicker armor - especially in the front part of the hull - which reached 120 mm! It was also assumed that the tank would have a 107mm cannon as its main armament, although the prototype produced had a 76.2mm cannon as armament. In the course of the tests, however, it turned out that the KW-3 is powered by a weak engine, its suspension is overloaded due to the considerable weight of the vehicle (about 70 tons), and the car's performance is not the best. Further work on the car partially minimized these shortcomings, but did not solve them. Finally, the KW-3 did not enter mass production.
