Rolls-Royce Griffon is a British aircraft engine from the interwar period and World War II. Its first successful start-up took place in 1939. Its production was primarily the responsibility of Rolls-Royce Limited plants, and its total production in these plants exceeded 8,000 units. In the Griffon 65 version, the engine was 2.06 meters long, 0.77 meters wide and 1.17 meters high. Its capacity was 36.7 liters, and the weight of the "dry" engine of this type did not exceed 900 kilograms. The Rolls-Royce Griffon was a liquid-cooled 12-cylinder V-engine with cylinders arranged in a V-shape. It was able to generate - in the Griffon 65 version - a maximum power of 2,220 hp. Work on the presented engine started in 1938, and the engine was initially intended for new aircraft of the Royal Navy (Fleet Air Arm), especially for the Fairey Firefly machines. However, it was also installed relatively quickly on some versions of the Spitfire. It is worth adding that the design of this engine was constantly developed during World War II, and its individual versions differed significantly in the achieved maximum power. For example, the Griffon IIB engine reached 1730 hp, while the Griffon 61 - already 2035 hp, and the Griffon 85 - up to 2375 hp! Various versions of this engine were used on such aircraft as: Fairey Firefly Mark I (Griffon IIB version), Supermarine Spitfire XII (Griffon IIB version), Spitfire F. Mk. XIV (Griffon 61 engine) or Supermarine Spiteful Mark XIV and XV (Griffon 85 and 89 engines).
