The Old Synagogue in Krakow is a Judaic temple, currently located at ul. Szeroka 24 in Kazimierz. It is one of the oldest preserved synagogues in our country and one of the most valuable monuments of Jewish culture and religious architecture in the Old Continent. The synagogue was most likely erected at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, but some studies indicate rather the end of the 15th century. The building was erected in the Gothic style and had two aisles, which was rare among buildings of this type in Europe. In the mid-16th century, the synagogue was largely destroyed by fire, but by 1570 the building was rebuilt in Renaissance style by Mateo Gucci. Until 1939, the synagogue served as the main Judaic temple for the Jewish commune of the city of Kraków. During World War II, it was devastated in an unimaginable way by the German occupier, and its rich liturgical equipment was plundered. In the years 1956-1959, however, the synagogue was successfully reconstructed by a team led by architects: Józef Jamroz and Józef Ptak. After renovation, the synagogue became a museum.
