The Swedish Army (Swedish Svenska armen) is one of the most powerful armed forces in Sweden (Swedish Försvarsmakten). In 2017, the latter had approximately 22,500 soldiers in the line and approximately 34,500 reservists of both sexes. It is worth adding that in 2019 the Swedish government allocated the equivalent of approximately EUR 5.68 billion to its armed forces, i.e. 1% of Sweden's GDP. With the end of the Cold War, the Swedish army was diminished in a gigantic way - from 100 battalions in 1995, to just 2 first line battalions and 4 auxiliary companies in 2010! However, after 2010, there is a clear tendency towards the expansion of the Swedish army, which planned to deploy three brigades with the strength of probably a dozen or so battalions in 2025. The basic armament of the Swedish infantryman is an automatic carbine Automatkarbin 5 (in short: Ak 5) cal. 5.56 mm, produced domestically and Ak 4 (license version of the German Heckler und Koch G3) cal. 7.62 mm. The weapons to support Swedish infantry units at the lowest ranks include the 7.62 mm Ksp 58 light machine gun (a licensed version of the MAG 58 rifle). Artillery support is provided by the Archer self-propelled guns (in the Swedish nomenclature: The 155mm Artillerisystem 08 and the domestic-made 155mm Fälthaubits 77 towed howitzers.
