Charles XII, descended from the side line of the Wittelsbach dynasty, reigned as king of Sweden from 1697-1718. He spent almost the entire reign of his reign on the Great Northern War (1700-1721), during which he was often able to show off considerable military talents, for example in the battles of Narva (1700), Daugava (1701) or Kliszów (1702). It is worth remembering, however, that Charles XII led an army of high combat value into battle. Quantitatively, the main element of this army was, of course, infantry, which from 1682 was almost largely composed of Swedes and Finns. It is worth adding that recruitment to the army at that time was based primarily on the so-called indelningsverket . At the outbreak of the Great Northern War, the Swedish infantry counted 22 regiments recruited on the basis of indelningsverket and 14 more volunteer regiments (de facto mercenaries). "Native" regimes, made up of Swedes and Finns, usually numbered 1,200 soldiers, although there were also individuals with 1,500 men. It is worth remembering, however, that during the reign of Charles XII, subsequent infantry regiments of various strengths were established, such as three utskriving regiments, formed in 1717 with a force of 650-700 men, and intended to defend the Swedish coasts. It should also be remembered that the foot guard regiment (Swedish Kunglig Majestats livgardet till fot) was much more numerous, initially with 1,800 soldiers, and later even 3,000 men! In general, the Swedish infantry during the Great Northern War, especially at its beginning, was very well trained and clearly outperformed its Russian counterpart. Negative changes came only with the defeat at Poltava in 1709.
