The civil war in Syria broke out in March 2011 and is still ongoing (2019). However, the scale of the protests and their range surprised the Syrian government, which allowed the rebels to take control of several cities, including Homs. The government party conducted Sztum on this city in February-March 2012. From 2012-2013, the war became radicalized, and in 2013, chemical weapons were used in it for the first time. The conflict also began to have an increasingly religious emphasis. It is worth adding that in 2015 Russia supported President al-Assad militarily by sending an air military contingent to Syria.
