The W-55 (V-55) engine is a Soviet Cold War diesel engine. The engine had 12 cylinders, was cooled with water, and its capacity reached 38.8 liters. In the basic version, the generated maximum power reached 580 HP, while in the later versions it increased to 800 HP. The engine was in fact a far-reaching development of the drive unit known from the T-34 vehicles, i.e. the W-2-34 engine. It kept very similar dimensions, capacity and engine body made of aluminum. However, the engine has been refined technologically, the quality of workmanship has been improved and a few modifications have been made. All this had a positive effect not only on the generated maximum power, but also on the durability of the W-55 engine, compared to the W-2-34. During production, the engine was systematically modernized, which translated into a further increase in its power. The W-55 engine was used primarily as a power unit for the T-54 / T-55 tank, where it achieved a power-to-weight ratio of 14.6 KM / t and a top speed of 48 km / h.
