The Colosseum (actually: the Flavian Amphitheater) is a monumental Roman building erected in the first century AD, and more precisely in the years from about 70 to 82 AD by the emperors Vespasian and Titus. The building was and still has an elliptical shape, 188 meters long and 156 meters wide, and its height is 48.5 meters. Assume that in the ancient times it could contain from 40 to 50 thousand. viewers! Since its inception, it has served primarily as an arena for gladiatorial fights, a place of staged sea battles and hunting wild animals. Interestingly, the Colosseum was by no means the largest building in the ancient city of Rome - Circus Maximus deserved such a name, but it has not survived to our times. It is worth adding that the Colosseum was severely damaged during an earthquake in the middle of the 5th century, and the last games were held there at the beginning of the next century - probably around 528. At present, it is one of the most recognizable buildings in Rome and is a huge tourist attraction.
