German Type VII submarines were the basic weapon of the U-bootwaffe during the battles in the Atlantic (1939 / 1940-1944), especially in the period 1939-1942 / 1943. In total, about 700 ships of various sub-types of this class of submarines were built. The U-boot Type VII C, like other ships of this type, used diesel-electric propulsion. It consisted of two M6V 40/46 6-cylinder diesel engines with a total power of up to 1,720 kW produced by MAN AG. The electric drive, used in submersion, was provided by the engines of the Swiss company Brown, Boveri und Compagnie (BBC) GG UB 720/8 with a total power of 750 HP. These engines could reach a surface speed of 17.7 knots, and a underwater speed of up to 7.6 knots. It is worth noting that they also allowed a swimming range of 8,500 nautical miles at a speed of 10 knots in the surf position and only 80 nautical miles at a speed of 4 knots in the underwater position.
