Pierwsze próby z wykorzystaniem jednostek powietrznodesantowych miały miejsce w amerykańskich siłach zbrojnych na początku lat 30. XX wieku, ale okazały się one niepomyślne. Dopiero wybuch II wojny światowej w Europie przyspieszył rozwój tej formacji w Stanach Zjednoczonych, a pierwszą jednostką spadochronową w dziejach US Army był jeden z plutonów 29 Regimentu Piechoty, który w 1940 roku przeszedł stosowne przeszkolenie. Jedną z najważniejszych postaci w rozwoju amerykańskich jednostek powietrznodesantowych był gen. William C. Lee, nazywany też ojcem tej formacji. W toku II wojny światowej sformowano dwie dywizje powietrznodesantowe: 82. („All American”) oraz 101. („Screaming Eagle”). Amerykańskie wojska tego typu odegrały ogromną w pierwszych dniach operacji w Normandii (czerwiec 1944 r.), ale walczyły też później w ramach operacji Market-Garden (1944 r.) czy Varsity (1945 r.).
