NIKO MODEL 7036 USS SIMS DD-409 1938

USS Sims (DD-409) was an American destroyer from the interwar period and World War II. The keel for this unit was laid in 1937, and the launch took place in April 1939. The total length of the ship at the time of launching was 106.2 meters and the width was 11 meters. Full displacement reached approx. 2,200 tons, and the maximum speed was approx. 35 knots. The armament at the time of the launch consisted of, among others, five 127 mm guns, eight 533 mm torpedo tubes and depth charge launchers.

USS Sims (DD-409) was the leading unit of the destroyer class of the same name. These ships were designed and built to complement and partially replace the Benham-class destroyers. Compared to their predecessors, they were slightly larger, slightly slower, but had stronger artillery and torpedo armaments. Belonging to this class USS Sims at the time of US accession to World War II was assigned to Task Force 17 formed around the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier. At the turn of 1941 and 1942, the USS Sims sailed from the US West Coast towards Samoa as a cover for one of the American convoys. In February 1942, as part of Task Force 17, it was supposed to attack Wake Island, but orders were changed at the last minute. The destroyer USS Sims was sunk on May 7, 1942 during the Battle of the Coral Sea.
